Katie’s Acre Chardonnay 2019
$50 / Bottle (750ml)
“Don’t you dare touch that tree.” These words from Katie, our Nana, preserved a giant old walnut tree when Gene, our Granddaddy, began planting our estate vineyards in the late 1960s. The tree still stands today, its magnificent canopy shading nearly an acre of land. We often gather under its majestic branches in a space we lovingly call Katie’s Acre, surrounded by the exceptional Chardonnay vineyard that is the sole source for this radiant wine.
The dormant season was wet with much more rain than usual before the skies cleared in April, just in time for bud break. The weather in May was surprisingly cool and rainy again, slowing down the vine growth, and serving as a harbinger of the roller-coaster growing season that followed. The summer months alternated between warmer and cooler than average but, thankfully, the daily high temperatures rarely exceeded 100°F. September was warm and sunny, providing the perfect finish and all the grapes were in by mid-October.
Complex and round with concentrated citrus and tropical fruit flavors enhanced with just a touch of toast. It’s bright and full-bodied with layered notes of almond, quince, and a distinct salinity. The finish is mouthwatering and leaves you wanting more.
Katie’s Acre Chardonnay pairs beautifully with sushi and shellfish, like langoustines, clams, and mussels. It is also ideal with flaky white fish. For a delicious garden pairing, Winery Chef Chris Kennedy suggests serving this wine with Katie’s White Bean and Vegetable Soup.
