A tribute to Janet & John Trefethen and their incredible love story.
In 1973, in a quiet agricultural valley north of San Francisco, a young navy veteran and a former California rodeo queen fell in love over a bottle of wine. Their love blossomed, and while she kept riding and he kept flying, together they built a winery and a family, helping to shape the Napa Valley and the American fine wine industry along the way.
This blend opens with layered aromas of plum and cherry, accented by savory notes of tomato, black pepper, and clove. On the palate, subtle hints of cocoa, fennel, and pink peppercorn add depth and intrigue. Fine tannins provide structure and balance, carrying the wine through a long, polished finish.
As the winter rains had arrived early and stopped early, the vineyard soils were already quite dry when the vines began growing in the spring. We responded with early irrigation and the vines thrived throughout a very mild summer. The warm sunny days and cool evenings, reflecting our unique location in the Oak Knoll District of the Napa Valley, were perfect for ripening the grapes. The weather took a turn in September, with a significant heat spell followed by early rains, but fortunately our most delicate varieties had already been harvested. We are delighted with the character of this vintage, which features the classic Trefethen brightness on the palate.
Winery Chef Chris Kennedy recommends pairing this wine with Cacio e Pepe or a fully-loaded baked potato, where richness and peppery spice echo the wine's savory character. Its earthy undertones also shine alongside mushroom-forward dishes or slow-stewed tomato preparations, enhancing the wine's depth and balance.
