Deep, dark, and brooding, Petit Verdot is full of personality.
Late to ripen, this Bordeaux variety is usually one of the last we harvest and the wine is stained inky black almost immediately. Rarely bottled on its own, this small-lot wine demonstrates the herbal, floral, gravelly, brambly enigma of Petit Verdot.
Aromas of clove, allspice, and rhubarb intertwine with delicate floral notes and a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, hints of crème de violette and earth create depth, while firm, mid-palate tannins provide structure and tension. The finish is graceful yet powerful, showcasing both the wine’s floral lift and its grounded, textural core.
As the winter rains had arrived early and stopped early, the vineyard soils were already quite dry when the vines began growing in the spring. We responded with early irrigation and the vines thrived throughout a very mild summer. The warm sunny days and cool evenings, reflecting our unique location in the Oak Knoll District of the Napa Valley, were perfect for ripening the grapes. The weather took a turn in September, with a significant heat spell followed by early rains, but fortunately our most delicate varieties had already been harvested. We are delighted with the character of this vintage, which features the classic Trefethen brightness on the palate.
This wine’s floral lift and earthy depth make it a beautiful match for fall-inspired dishes. Its structure and spice pair effortlessly with game meats like venison, bison, or squab, while its textural core complements braised preparations and roasted root vegetables. Winery Chef Chris Kennedy recommends enjoying it alongside richly seasoned, slow-cooked dishes that highlight the warmth and comfort of the season.
