The planting of Cabernet Sauvignon which forms the Northwest corner of our Estate, Block 296 has long produced some of our favorite barrels. One of the last parcels we pick, this block is remarkable in its poise and balance, both in the vineyard and in the bottle. This small-lot bottling throws a spotlight on the spicy, classic nature of the fruit from 296, a block that over time has reached the pinnacle of natural equilibrium.
Bright aromas of cherry and raspberry are layered with hints of tobacco and a touch of spice. On the palate, smooth tannins carry flavors of dried cherry and plum, with just a whisper of earthy richness on the finish.

As the winter rains had arrived early and stopped early, the vineyard soils were already quite dry when the vines began growing in the spring. We responded with early irrigation and the vines thrived throughout a very mild summer. The warm sunny days and cool evenings, reflecting our unique location in the Oak Knoll District of the Napa Valley, were perfect for ripening the grapes. The weather took a turn in September, with a significant heat spell followed by early rains, but fortunately our most delicate varieties had already been harvested. We are delighted with the character of this vintage, which features the classic Trefethen brightness on the palate.
The bold structure and savory depth of this wine make it a natural match for smoky, indulgent dishes. Think slow-cooked BBQ, braised collard greens, or rich mac and cheese. Winery Chef Chris Kennedy suggests pairing it with Crispy Gnocchi with Smoky Fondue and Fresh Black Truffle.
