2008 HaLo

Our flagship wine, HaLo is named for our children, Hailey and Loren, who grew up in the middle of our Hillspring Vineyard in the Mayacamas foothills of western Napa Valley, the source of this extraordinary red wine. The vineyard’s rocky, shallow soils, coupled with a climate protected from fog and wind, make Hillspring the perfect spot to grow exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Vintage

The growing season in 2008 began with more spring frosts than we have experienced in decades. Two out of every three nights during the month of April we were in the vineyard frost-protecting. In addition, rainfall was minimal. Once into summer, however, the growing season was splendid, and a beautiful autumn provided the perfect finish.

The Wine

To taste HaLo is to take a magical walk through our Hillspring Vineyard. Aromas of blackberries and bay leaves like those that grow along the spring-fed creek that flows through the property entice the nose. The perfume from the oak forest that surrounds the vineyard invites the palate and delivers complex and deep flavors of tobacco, smoke and earth coming from the soil.

The wine is complex with multilayers of cloves, chocolate, juicy plum and raspberry that all ride on a bright peppery, gamey base. Energetic and beautifully balanced, decanting will bring out the best in this delicious wine.

Food Affinities

The full body of the wine marries well with protein and fat such as those found in beef, game and game birds. Add a mushroom or reduced wine sauce and your palate will be singing with pleasure. Thyme is a lovely complement.

Trefethen has been on a roll the last few years, producing some of Napa’s most spectacular Cabernets. This bottling, which contains minor quantities of Petit Verdot and Merlot, spent 28 months in new French oak barrels. The fruit is incredibly ripe and intense, with flavors of black currants and chocolate-covered cherries. This beauty is just now beginning its long journey. Drink now–2020.

95 POINTS (v. 2008)
Starting out with a wonderfully well-composed mix of currants, cocoa, sweet soils and twist of woodsiness in the nose and following up fully on its tantalizing promise with well-ripened flavors that match, this latest bottling of Trefethen's flagship Cabernet is, even at five years of age, a solid, straight-spined youngster that has not yet begun to grow into its own. It is bound up in tannin but never loses its keen fruity bearings, and its high endorsement comes with the sole caveat that it be cellared away for no fewer than another five to eight years with the complete confidence.

Wine Enthusiast, March 2013

95 POINTS (v. 2007)
“As deep as any of its high-priced cousins and far more polished than most, the 2007 HaLo is a striking wine of real complexity and nuance...and, here again, it shows a sophisticated sense of refinement that reaffirms its place as one of the very best in its class.”
