At Trefethen Vineyards we are proud to have an exceptional team of winemakers ~ David Whitehouse, Jr. and Peter Luthi. With over fifty years between them making these great wines. They respect the land and its significant contribution to the beauty of the grapes. They have created elegant, world-class wines from this estate vineyard.

David Whitehouse, Jr.
Winemaster David Whitehouse, Jr. joined John and Janet in 1975. His 1976 Chardonnay was ranked "Best in the World" at the World Wine Olympics held in Paris. This was just the beginning for this Massachusetts native who had worked with Robert Mondavi and Callaway before settling into his tenure at Trefethen.

For over 30 years, David Whitehouse, Jr., as Vice President of Vineyard and Winery Operations has led Trefethen through the early years and the early successes to the challenging years of phylloxera to the rebirth of the vineyards we celebrate in the new century.

Peter Luthi
Winemaker Peter Luthi arrived in 1983 and took the helm as Head Winemaker in 1985. For over twenty years, Swiss-born Luthi has honed the elegant style of Trefethen wines. In 1989, he set his sites on making the best Cabernet Sauvignon he could from this exceptional estate.

The Trefethen 1989 Cabernet took " Best in the State" at the California State Fair Wine Competition. His 1994 Cabernet was acclaimed "Double Gold Medal" and "Best of Class for all Napa Valley Cabernets", again at the California State Fair. In 1997 he created HaLo Cabernet Sauvignon that would be named one of the "Top 10 Cabernets of the Year" by Wine and Spirits Magazine and "Top 100 Wines" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Cheers to this great team!
