Trefethen Family Vineyards

2012 "Clone 809" Chardonnay

This Chardonnay features a special section of our estate vineyard known as Katie’s Acre. Replanted in 2005, the block includes four different clones of Chardonnay including two recent imports from France and two selections with a long heritage in California. This wine is 100% Clone 809 from Dijon, France. A favorite of our winemaking team, 809 brings delicate floral tones to the finished wines reminiscent of Musqué―a term used to describe a very aromatic wine.

The Vintage

A classic vintage for the Napa Valley, the 2012 growing season was characterized by warm days and cool nights. In our vineyards in the Oak Knoll District, a dry and warm spring provided the vines with a strong start and the summer was generally mild with most days getting up into the 80’s and many nights as low as the 40’s. The early start to the season was tempered by a slightly cooler than average autumn resulting in typical harvest dates for all varieties–and grapes and wines of exceptional quality.

The Wine

This very small production wine combines fragrant aromas of Muscat with the creamy texture of Chardonnay. Highlighting flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruit and pineapple, the wine is supported with good acidity and brightness.

Food Affinities

Chicken and dumplings or seafood with a beurre blanc sauce shine with this wine. Also try a Provençal vegetable tart or popcorn with sweet butter and sea salt. As a perfect summertime wine, throw a bottle or two into your picnic basket to enhance a causal al fresco meal.
