As one of the pioneering families of Napa Valley and some of the most experimental winegrowers in California, the Trefethens are generally an open-minded bunch. But when the winemaker presented John and Janet with an unlikely blend of Chardonnay, Riesling and Viognier, they thought he had finally had a little too much to drink. Until they tasted it, of course. Beautifully fragrant and refreshing, this vintage of Quandary was produced in a limited quantity.

The Vintage

A classic vintage for the Napa Valley, the 2012 growing season was characterized by warm days and cool nights. In our vineyards in the Oak Knoll District, a dry and warm spring provided the vines with a strong start and the summer was generally mild with most days getting up into the 80’s and many nights as low as the 40’s. The early start to the season was tempered by a slightly cooler than average autumn resulting in typical harvest dates for all varieties–and grapes and wines of exceptional quality.

The Wine

What wine shall we open tonight? Such a Quandary! We have the answer in Trefethen’s propriety white blend. This wine is reminiscent of a visit to a tropical island with notes of melon, pineapple and guava. Honeysuckle, gardenia and vanilla spice fill the palate before ending with a clean and crisp finish.

Food Affinities

An ideal picnic, patio, pool and back porch sipping wine. The wine pairs well with crispy spring rolls, orange peel chicken or with seafood, poultry or vegetarian dishes.
