As one of the pioneering families of Napa Valley and some of the most experimental winegrowers in California, the Trefethens are generally an open-minded bunch. But when the winemaker presented John and Janet with an unlikely blend of Chardonnay, Riesling and Viognier, they thought he had finally had a little too much to drink. Until they tasted it, of course. Beautifully fragrant and refreshing, this 2011 vintage of Quandary was produced in a limited quantity.
The VintageAnother in a series of cooler vintages, 2011 got off to a late start with a cool and wet spring. It even rained a couple inches in June, a month that is typically dry. The rest of the summer was more seasonable, although not quite as hot as usual. With vine development progressing, but still delayed, we were delighted to have a very warm and dry September. October was a roller coaster with some rains and high humidity early on and then, thankfully, some dry and warm winds from the north provided the finishing touch for the later varieties.
The WineReminiscent of a tropical island, the nose is lush with hints of cantaloupe and lemon grass. Papaya, ginger and citrus fill the palate and finish with a clean bright and rich mouthfeel.
Food AffinitiesPerfect for summertime picnics or with casual cocktail treats.
