This wine is a celebration of our historic winery building, originally constructed in 1886. Designed by Hamden McIntyre, who was also responsible for the original wineries at Far Niente and Inglenook, our building is unique because of its wooden construction. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1988, this building has played a major role in the history of our own enterprise. For many years, we have used it for the storage of our wines in barrel and as the home of our tasting room.
The grapes for this wine were still on the vine when the ground shook on August 24, severely damaging our historic winery. The building has since been fully restored, including a seismic retrofit, and was re-opened to the public in May 2017.

We feel very fortunate to have brought in such fantastic grapes in a year that was marked by severe drought and a significant earthquake here in Napa just as harvest began. The weather throughout the growing season was absolutely perfect, with our classic warm days and cool nights. We brought in grapes from each block as they reached ideal ripeness and have produced wines of truly exceptional quality. The Wine
The nose is very generous with tobacco, black plum, clove and violets. The palate is still youthful: very bright with tight-grained tannin, boysenberry, sage and cocoa powder. If you have the patience, leave this in your cellar for five years. If you just can’t wait, decant one hour before serving.Food Affinities
This is a wine for special occasions and important life moments. For the grand re-opening of our historic winery, we served Foundation with grilled rib eye steaks and black truffle sauce. It is best served with finer cuts of meat, lamb or game.
