2010 Harmony Chardonnay

This Chardonnay features a special section of our estate vineyard known as Katie’s Acre. Replanted in 2005, the block includes four different clones of Chardonnay including two recent imports from France and two selections with a long heritage in California. First the French, clone “809” has incredible floral aromas and clone “76” has long enjoyed favor in Burgundy. We hand selected the California budwood from Larry Hyde’s vineyard in Carneros, which traces its heritage back to the original Wente plantings. We actually used to have almost entirely “Wente” Chardonnay in the 1970’s. The combination of these clones and some thoughtful winemaking has produced a beautiful wine.

The Vintage

The vines got off to a slow start as April and May were both cooler and wetter than average. The cool trend continued into the mild summer and a full growing season that was our coolest since 1978. The exception was one notable heat spell in late August, when temperatures soared to over 111° F! Fortunately, September and October brought enough warm days to provide a beautiful finish to the growing season, allowing us to complete harvest a full week earlier than in 2009.

The Wine

The distinctive Chardonnay clones yield intense fruit with excellent complexity. Apple, mango and citrus lead to a silky entry followed by a suave and vibrant middle; the long finish is round and luscious.

Food Affinities

Enjoy this elegant Chardonnay with rich seafood such as lobster or halibut. It also pairs well with grilled veal chops with mushrooms and late summer vegetables such as corn, butternut squash or pumpkin ravioli.

“An amazingly complete wine that displays the faint tropical and dried citrus notes of a younger wine with the depth of bottle age (3 1/2 years). A trace of oak adds nuanced complexity.”
Dan Berger Vintage Experiences

92 Points (v. 2008)
“Achieving great loveliness in its rich and balanced blend of ripe apples, creme brûlée oakiness and seamlessly laid on enlivening acids… this wine has both depth and manners.”
