The 2007 growing season began with a dry, warm winter and spring, resulting in early budbreak, bloom and grape set. Low soil moisture curtailed foliage growth, ensuring the grape clusters enjoyed ample sunshine during a mild summer in which temperatures rarely reached 90 degrees. The cooler-than-normal weather fostered slow, even ripening, a relaxed, well-paced harvest, and wines with deeply concentrated, expressive flavors.
The WineThis unique, Malbec-based blend, whose label bears a replica of the Red Dragon on the national flag of Wales (The Trefethen Clan’s matriarch, the late Catherine Trefethen, was of Welsh descent), announces its presence with the imposing deep purple color and fragrant, massively concentrated aromas of boysenberry, olallieberry, cassis, brown spices and bittersweet chocolate. On the beautifully structured palate, lush black fruit, nutmeg and toasty oak flavors segue into a long, chocolate-y finish that would disarm the fiercest of dragons.
Food AffinitiesDelicious with pheasant, grouse, and duck; this wine also loves grilled steak.
